DISEASE






BLACK DEATH

Black Death or the black plague was the deadliest and killed 1 in 4 people. The black plagues consists of three types of plagues; bubonic, septicemic and pneumonia. Medieval people thought that these plagues were a punishment from God for their sins.


CHOLERA, DYSENTERY, TYPHOID FEVER

The above diseases occurred because of the use of dirty water and foods infected by bacteria.


DIPHTHERIA, INFLUENZA, WHOOPING COUGH

More diseases which were very contagious, many people ended up with severe throat and chest infections from these diseases. It didn't take long for them to spread which ended up with many people dying.


LEPROSY

Leprosy affected the person's skin, eyes, nerves and breathing. Leprosy could cause people to lose their fingers, toes and tips of their noses. Because poeple thought it was contagious, people with this diseases were put in leproseries (homes for those with the disease) and separated from their families to live in seclusion. Those with Leprosy had to wear a certain clothing and had to ring clappers and bells to warn people The church cared for these people.


MEASLES, SMALL POX, CHICKEN POX:

Because these diseases were very contagious, they spread quickly. Measles, small pox and chicken pox caused scarring of skin from blisters, high fevers and death.


SCURVY

Lack of Vitamin C caused poor diets which brought about Scurvy. Scurvy made their gums spongy and loosened the teeth of lower class, and some upper class.


SKIN DISEASES

Common among the peasants because bedbugs, fleas, lice tended to burrow into the wool of their clothing. Many of the skin diseases were because of poor hygiene, because they had to bring water from rivers or wells to bathe which was hard to do. Most of the lower class only took baths once a week, if even that.
