FRUIT

Fruit was served fresh, dried, or preserved, and used to sweeten foods because of the cost of sugar and honey. The southern areas preferred lemons, citrons, bitter oranges, pomegranates, quinces, and grapes.

While in the northern areas apples, pears, plums, and strawberries were preferred. Figs and dates were also in the south but were more expensive in the North.

The lower class enjoyed Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Lemons, Melons, Oranges, Quince, Peaches, Pomegranates, Raspberries, Red Currants, and Strawberries, but the upper class stayed away from fruit thinking they were beneath them.

Fruit and vegetables were not eaten much by the upper class because they were suspicious of it being tainted.
