BREADS

During the age of Camelot, bread was one of the staples of life; it was fairly cheap to make and could be formed into different shapes, made with a variety of ingredients, and served many different ways.

It can be made into rolls, bowls, sandwiches, crumbs; it can be prepared toasted, buttered, spread with many different toppings, stuffed with meat, flavored with spices, sweetened as a dessert, or baked with toppings on it. Everyone from the richest to the poorest ate bread, it was a daily staple. In fact, if a baker was caught not making enough in a days time, they could be jailed.

The Upper Class ate breads made of what flour while the lower class ate rye and barley breads. Breads enjoyed by the upper class were manchet, Cheat, Ravelled breads, while the lower class ate Brown or Black bread.

The Bread Trencher was popular during the time of Camelot and was considered an "edible plate". For the rich it was an easy way to feed many with less money. The stale, dry whole-meal bread was burrowed out and meat with sauce, or gravy was put into the hollow. The plate as well as the food, could be eaten.
