ACCOUCHEUR/ACCOUCHEUS:

Duties: Assisted women in childbirth.


ALMONER:

Duties: to give alms or charitable gifts to the poor, (charitable gifts were usually scraps of food from the castle).


APOTHECARY:

Duties: to make medicines, remedies and potions.


BAILIFF:

Duties: in charge of giving out jobs to those working at the castle, building repair, and repair of tools used by the peasants.


BAKER:

Duties: to make bread at the castle.


BARBER:

Duties: to cut hair and shave the Lord at the castle. Also served as dentist, surgeon and blood-letter.


BARD:

Duties: poet or minstrel.


BLACKSMITH:

Duties: to forge and sharpen tools, make hinges for doors, and window grills. Also called the Smith.


BOWMAN/ARCHERS:

Duties: Argolets and Balisters, skilled in using the crossbow, bow and arrow


BREWER:

Duties: to brew beer and ale.


BUTLER:

Duties: to care for the cellar and is in charge of the butts (a large barrel holding 56 gallons/448 pints) of wine and beer. Under him a staff of people might consist of tapsters, cellarers, dispensers and cupbearers.


CARPENTER:

Duties: to build flooring, roofing, furniture, panelling for rooms, scaffolding for building.


CARTERS:

Duties: workmen who use carts to bring wood, stone and other supplies to the site of a castle under construction.


CHANDLER:

Duties: The candle maker.


CLAKER:

Duties: magician/astrologer.

COOK:

Duties: to prepare and cook food for everyone at the castle.


COTTAR:

Duties: the lowest of the peasantry, as a result they did the lowest jobs.


EWERER:

Duties: brings and heats water for the nobles.


GONG SCOURER:

Duties: a guarderobe emptier and cleaner.


MASTER MASON:

Duties: responsible for the designing and overseeing the building of a stone structure.


MINSTREL:

Duties: provides entertainment in the form of singing and playing musical instruments.


PERFUMER:

Duties: manufacturer, purveyor of scents such as perfumes, colognes and incense.


PLUMBER:

Duties: someone who worked lead for roofing and windows.


PORTER:

Duties: took care of the doors, particularly the main entrance. The person also insured that no one entered or left the castle without permission. Also known as the door-ward.


REEVE:

Duties: supervises the work on lord's property.


SEAMSTRESS

Duties: sewing clothing, repairing clothing.


STEWARD:

Duties: takes care of the estate and domestic administration. Also known as a Seneschal.
